What a USDOT number actually is
The U.S. Department of Transportation assigns a unique number to every company authorized to transport household goods across state lines, and interstate movers are required to display it. Alongside the USDOT number, interstate carriers also carry an MC, or motor carrier, number tied to their operating authority. Together, these numbers are how the federal government tracks a company's safety record, insurance status, and complaint history.
How to look one up
The FMCSA's SAFER website lets anyone search a USDOT number and see the registered company name, address, authority status, and safety history for free. Before booking any interstate move, search the number the company gives you and confirm it matches the company you're actually talking to — not a similarly-named entity, and not a broker operating under someone else's authority.
What a mismatch or missing number tells you
If a company can't or won't give you a USDOT number, or if the number they give doesn't match their business name in the FMCSA database, treat that as a serious warning sign. Interstate movers are legally required to have this registration and to disclose it. A legitimate, established carrier will have no hesitation sharing it, because the information is public and verifying it works in their favor.
Why this matters even for a quick, cheap move
It's tempting to skip verification for a move that seems simple, but the companies most likely to cause real problems — vanishing deposits, holding belongings hostage for extra payment, no-show crews — are often the ones without valid operating authority. A two-minute SAFER lookup before you hand over a deposit is one of the highest-value steps you can take in the entire moving process.
