Start with the rooms you use least
Pack guest rooms, storage closets, and the garage first, since you won't need daily access to those items before move day. Working from least-used to most-used rooms means your kitchen and bathroom stay functional until the final days, which keeps daily life livable while you pack. Label every box with its destination room, not just its contents, so your crew can place it correctly at the new home without asking.
Living areas and bedrooms
Books, décor, and media go in small-to-medium boxes since they're deceptively heavy in bulk. Clothes can often stay on hangers inside wardrobe boxes, which saves significant packing and unpacking time. Bedding and pillows are ideal filler for gaps in boxes since they're soft and lightweight. Disassemble bed frames and large furniture a day or two ahead if you're handling that step yourself, and keep hardware in labeled bags taped to the matching piece.
Kitchen and bathroom, packed last
These rooms get packed in the final 24 to 48 hours since they're used daily. Set aside a small open-first box with basic dishes, a coffee maker, toiletries, and medications so your first morning in the new home doesn't require digging through a stack of boxes. Everything else — pantry items, small appliances, dishware — can be boxed earlier following room-specific wrapping methods.
The garage and outdoor items
Drain fuel from any gas-powered equipment before move day, since movers typically can't transport flammable liquids. Tools, sporting equipment, and seasonal decorations can be boxed weeks in advance since they're rarely needed day to day. Anything hazardous — paint, propane, chemicals — should be set aside for proper disposal rather than loaded onto the truck, since these items are commonly excluded from what a moving company can legally carry.
