Moving Into Assisted Living: A Step-by-Step Timeline

What to handle six weeks out, three weeks out, and on move-in day itself.

Six to eight weeks out: confirm the plan

Once a move-in date is set with a facility, confirm exactly what fits in the new space — most assisted living units are significantly smaller than a family home — and get any facility-specific rules about move-in day, elevator access, or approved moving windows. This is also the point to start the downsizing conversation in earnest if it hasn't already begun.

Three to four weeks out: sort and schedule

This is the window for sorting belongings into keep, donate, and pass-along piles, and for booking your mover with the facility's specific access requirements communicated in advance. Facilities often have designated move-in hours or require advance notice for elevator or loading-dock use, so confirm this with both the facility and your mover well before move day.

One to two weeks out: finalize details

Confirm the final furniture layout with the facility if they allow a walkthrough in advance, and pack a first-day bag with essentials so the new space feels livable immediately, even before every box is unpacked. Coordinate who from the family will be present on move day, since having a familiar face there tends to ease the transition significantly.

Move day and the days after

On move day, focus on getting the space functional first — bed made, personal photos out, essentials within reach — rather than fully organized. The organizing can happen gradually over the following days. Checking in frequently during the first week, in person or by phone, helps a parent feel supported as they settle into a new routine and a new sense of home.
