How to Prep Furniture for Long-Term Storage

Cleaning, wrapping, and organizing furniture so it comes out of storage in the same condition it went in.

Clean before you store, every time

Furniture should be cleaned before it goes into storage, not after it comes out. Dust, food residue, and moisture trapped against a surface for months can cause stains, mildew, or pest problems that wouldn't happen with a quick clean beforehand. This is a five-minute step per piece that prevents a much bigger problem down the line.

Wood furniture needs breathing room

Wrap wood furniture in moving blankets or breathable fabric rather than plastic, which can trap moisture against the surface and encourage mold or warping over an extended storage period. A light coat of furniture polish or wax on solid wood pieces before storage can help protect the finish during a longer stay.

Upholstery and mattresses need covers, not wraps

Breathable mattress and furniture covers protect upholstered pieces from dust without sealing in moisture. Stand mattresses on edge if the storage facility allows it, rather than stacking items on top, which can cause lasting indentations over a period of months. Keep fabric pieces off the floor on pallets or blocks if humidity is any concern at all.

Disassemble and organize for easier retrieval

Disassembling large furniture where practical saves space and reduces the chance of damage during handling, both going into storage and coming back out. Keep hardware bagged and taped to the matching piece, and create a simple inventory list or photo record of what's stored where, so retrieval months later doesn't turn into an archaeology project.
