Pack plates like a dishwasher, not a stack
Plates should be wrapped individually in paper and packed on their edge, vertically, rather than stacked flat — the same way a dishwasher holds them. Standing plates on edge lets them flex slightly under pressure instead of cracking under direct weight from above. Use a dish-barrel box with thick walls rather than a standard box, and fill any remaining gaps with crumpled paper so nothing can shift during transport.
Glasses and stemware need a cushioned collar
Wrap glasses and stemware individually, then add an extra layer of padding around the rim, which is typically the most fragile point. Pack them upright, never upside down, in a box with dividers if you have them. Cell-divider dish-pack boxes work well for stemware specifically because each piece gets its own compartment and can't knock against its neighbor during the move.
Small appliances and sharp items
Wrap blender or mixer blades separately in thick paper and tape them shut before boxing, both to protect the blade and to protect whoever unpacks the box later. Coffee makers and toasters should be packed with any loose parts, like carafes or trays, padded separately inside the same box, cushioned on all sides. Keep appliance manuals and cords with the appliance in a labeled bag taped to the item.
Building the box so nothing shifts
Line the bottom of every dish box with a few inches of crumpled paper before adding anything, then fill every gap around each wrapped item as you go — a loose box is a broken box. Heavier items go on the bottom, lighter ones on top, and the box should feel snug, not rattly, when you gently shake it before sealing. Label it fragile and this-side-up clearly on at least two sides.
