How Moving Season Affects Your Price (and How to Save)

Summer, month-end, and weekends all carry a premium — here's how to schedule around it.

Why summer is the most expensive season to move

June through August is peak moving season nationwide, driven by school calendars, lease turnover dates, and better weather for loading a truck. Demand for crews and trucks rises sharply, and pricing during these months tends to run noticeably higher than the rest of the year. If your move date is flexible, shifting it even a few weeks outside the June through August window can open up more availability and better pricing, since movers aren't stretched as thin.

End-of-month and lease-cycle pressure

Even outside of summer, the last few days of any month see a spike in demand because most leases turn over on the first. If your new lease or closing date allows it, booking a move for the middle of the month, especially a weekday, tends to come with more schedule flexibility and fewer competing bookings for the same crews and trucks. Ask your mover which dates in your target month have the most availability before locking in a date.

Holidays and weekends carry their own premium

Weekends are popular for obvious reasons — most people don't want to take time off work to move — which means Saturday bookings fill up first and can carry higher demand-driven pricing than a weekday. Moving around a major holiday adds another layer of scheduling pressure. If your schedule allows a Tuesday or Wednesday move instead of a Saturday, it's worth asking whether that shifts your options or pricing.

How to use season to your advantage

If you have any flexibility at all on your moving date, use it. A move scheduled for a weekday in October, for example, is likely to have more available crews and more room for scheduling flexibility than a Saturday in July. Ask your mover directly whether shifting your date by a week or two would meaningfully change your price or crew options — sometimes a small date change makes a real difference.
