How Long-Distance Moving Valuation Coverage Works
Valuation isn't insurance — here's the difference between released-value and full-value protection.

Valuation coverage isn't the same as insurance
Valuation is the moving industry's term for the mover's liability for your belongings, and it's a distinct concept from a traditional insurance policy. Basic released-value coverage is often included by default on a long-distance move, but it's calculated per pound, per item, not based on what the item is actually worth. Understanding this distinction before you book is one of the most important parts of protecting your belongings.
What released-value coverage actually pays
Basic released-value protection typically pays a small, fixed amount per pound for a damaged or lost item, regardless of its real value. A lightweight but expensive item — a laptop, a piece of jewelry, a framed piece of art — can be poorly protected under this default coverage precisely because its weight doesn't reflect its worth. This is why the default option is rarely sufficient for anything genuinely valuable.
Full-value protection, and what it costs
Full-value protection is typically an upgrade you select and pay for separately, and it obligates the mover to repair, replace, or reimburse the current market value of a damaged or lost item, rather than a flat per-pound rate. Ask your mover what full-value protection costs for your specific shipment and how claims under that coverage are documented and processed.
What to do before you book
Take inventory of anything in your home worth more than roughly $100 per pound — electronics, jewelry, art, antiques — and ask specifically how each item would be covered under your mover's default valuation versus an upgraded option. Get the answer in writing as part of your estimate, and photograph high-value items before they're loaded so you have a documented record of their condition beforehand.
