How to Choose a Moving Company (Without Getting Burned)

Are you a mover or a broker?
This is the #1 question. Brokers don't move you — they sell your job to whichever crew bids lowest. The crew you meet on move day may not be who you spoke to on the phone. Ask for the USDOT number and look it up on the FMCSA website.
Can I see your facility?
Real movers have a warehouse, a truck fleet, and an office. If they can't or won't show you, you're talking to a phantom. Visit before booking for any move over $5,000.
What's your binding-quote policy?
A 'non-binding estimate' can grow on move day. A 'binding-not-to-exceed' quote is the gold standard: it can come in lower, but never higher.
How do you handle damage claims?
Get the answer in writing. The legitimate process is a formal claim form, photographic documentation, and a written response within 30 days. If you hear 'we'll figure it out,' walk away.
