Broker vs. Carrier: What's the Difference and Why It Matters
One owns the trucks and employs the crew. The other sells your job to someone else. Here's why that distinction changes your risk.

What a carrier actually is
A carrier is the company that owns the trucks, employs the crew, and holds the USDOT and MC operating authority that lets it legally transport household goods. When you book with a carrier directly, the person who quotes your move, the crew that loads it, and the company responsible if something goes wrong are all the same entity. That accountability is the core advantage of working with a carrier instead of an intermediary.
What a broker actually does
A broker's job is to collect your information, generate a quote, and sell your job to a carrier in their network, often the one willing to do it for the lowest price. Brokers can be a legitimate part of the industry, but the arrangement means your actual movers are chosen after you've already agreed to a price, and you may not learn who they are until shortly before move day.
Why the distinction changes your risk
When a broker sells your job downstream, pricing, timing, and even the condition of the truck and crew are largely out of the broker's hands once the handoff happens. If damage occurs or the delivery date slips, you may be negotiating between two companies instead of one. Booking directly with a carrier removes that extra layer and keeps one company accountable for your estimate, your crew, and your claim if something goes wrong.
How to tell which one you're talking to
Ask directly: do you own the trucks and employ the crew, or will this move be assigned to another company? Then check the USDOT number they give you against the FMCSA SAFER database, which will show the entity type on file. A carrier's number will be tied to actual operating authority and equipment; a broker's listing will show broker authority instead of carrier authority.
